Training Your Puppy For the First Time

first night with new puppy tips

It is when many new dog owners find out that they have an energetic and mischievous puppy that can be quite difficult to housetrain. This article will help you better understand how to prepare for your first night with your new puppy and will also provide some helpful first puppy tips to get you started.

Thing That You Need To Do

The first thing that you need to do is set up your new puppy in their bed. Puppies love to sleep in their beds, and many times will not whine or cry during the night if they are in their bed. For obvious reasons, it is very important to get them into their bed when they are fully awake, but even if your puppy whines during the night it is still best to get them in their bed. Once your puppy is in their bed, allow them to sniff and explore the entire room. Many times people will let their dogs go through their bedroom and immediately rush to the first spot that they see where they think the puppy may have slept.

During the first night with your puppy, do not feed them anything immediately before you put them in their bed. It is very important that they are given their regular meal and they are also probably not going to want to eat the food that you are trying to give them. For the first couple days, leave a little bit of table scraps around so that they can smell things and be interested in what their new home contains. If you notice that your puppy has a preference for one area of your house, then you should not try to make them change their sleeping area. They will not understand why they won’t be able to sleep in their favorite spot, just like we do not understand why someone won’t want to sleep in a small bedroom.

Do Not Play Immediately

When you bring your puppy home, do not play with them immediately before you put them in their bed. This can cause your puppy to startle or even hurt themselves during the process. First, take them outside to a secure spot where you can allow them to play freely before you put them in their crate. You can even hold them by the scruff of the neck while they play with the dog until they calm down. During the night, try to keep your puppy in a neutral place such as in the corner of a room or a leash is good.

Most Owners Never Seem To Get Right

The process of getting a puppy to go to the bathroom when they need to is something that most owners never seem to get right. The first few days are probably going to be the hardest for your puppy, but it will get better. The first thing you should do when your puppy wakes up in the morning is to praise them. Give them lots of positive reinforcement, even if it seems silly, in order to get them to pee when they need to. You will find that as long as you stay on top of things, your puppy is going to start to be trained at night.

Summing Up

During the first night together as a couple, you might need to spend a little more time with your puppy. You should probably get them out in the yard and play with them for about half an hour so that they are familiar with being alone with you. When you first get your puppy home, you should make sure that you keep a close eye on him or her, because if your puppy does something that they shouldn’t it will be much harder to train them.
