Bearded collies are originally from Scotland. They were developed as herding dogs and this is their primary task in the present day as well. Bearded collies are intelligent and work with great intensity on things they love to do. These dogs are also good companions for older adults and young children.

Temperament

Bearded collies tend to be loyal, loving, trustworthy, gentle, alert, and devoted dogs that make excellent family pets. Bearded collies can be even-tempered or irritable if not properly socialized when they are puppies. They get along well with other dogs and pets if they are properly introduced. Bearded collies like to show affection but can become protective of their owners as well.

Health

Bearded collies are generally healthy dogs as long as they receive proper care and training. Bearded collies may develop hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hypothyroidism, and allergies.

Care

Bearded collies need daily exercise and attention since they tend to be very active and curious dogs. Bearded collies love activities such as running, biking, hiking, swimming, etc., especially when they get along with other dogs because it takes the focus off them for a while. Bearded collies should not stay outdoors for extended periods of time, since they are very people-oriented. Bearded collies need an owner who is willing to be consistent with them during training so that they can get along well in society. Bearded collies prefer clean environments and some can be quite fastidious about their personal hygiene.

Training

Bearded collies are very intelligent dogs who learn quickly when taught new skills; Bearded collies respond best to positive reinforcement for good behavior instead of punishment for bad behavior. Bearded collies must be socialized at a young age or else they may become aggressive towards strangers (dog-aggressive). Bearded collies tend not to bark too much but will make lots of noise if there is an intruder in your yard or if they see a potential threat. Bearded collies should be trained to walk without pulling on the leash so that they can wear a harness instead of a collar and avoid any neck injuries. Bearded collies must be housebroken too. Bearded collies may refuse to eat their food in an outdoor environment, even if there is water present, although this does not happen often. Bearded Collie’s training requires an owner who has patience and is willing to provide daily opportunities for Bearded Collie’s mental and physical activities and plenty of exercises every day with positive reinforcement training methods such as clicker training or lure-reward training.
